New Business Updates

The Fifth Down

912 Rainforest Parkway
Columbia, MO 65202

Damon Turley opened his sports bar on Oct. 1 in the former location of T.P.’s Bar and Grill, which is in a retail center adjacent to the newly widened section of Range Line Street that includes Jimmy Johns and Agave restaurant.

Turley said the bar is a good location for anyone who wants to get a drink without the hassle of going downtown.

“I feel that there is a very good opportunity and limited competition up in that area,” Turley said.

Turley cited changing drinking habits as another reason for opening the bar in north Columbia. He said more people in the 25-and-up crowd want to stay closer to home when they go out for beers and aren’t going downtown as they used to.

The Fifth Down serves a typical sports bar menu, including hamburgers and chicken wings, and employs around 10 people.

April Hill and her husband, Josh, saw a need in Columbia for a one-stop medical supply store and decided to fill it.

Just What the Dr. Ordered, which opened Dec. 1, sells everything from walkers and electric scooters to walk-in bathtubs, which they both sell and install.

“We have the more complicated things where doctors give prescriptions, and we have zipper pulls and things that go on a spoon to make it easier to grasp a spoon,” Hill said.

Just What the Dr. Ordered, located on the corner of Chapel Hill Road and Forum Boulevard, also employs a respiratory therapist and a certified orthotist who can do diabetic shoe fittings. They offer free delivery and are available 24 hours a day.

America’s Mattress

Broadway Shop
2609 E. Broadway Suite 105

Don and Carla Helmreich, John Graves and Gene Lavely.

Downtown Appliance operators Don and Carla Helmreich, John Graves and Gene Lavely opened their new venture, America’s Mattress, in August.

Lavely, who’s managing the new business, said the new space, with 3,400 square feet, allows them to put about 25 Serta mattresses on display, more than twice as many as they could display in the downtown store.

“We wanted to have a store that had more variety and a lot more beds,” Lavely said.

They also designed the interior of the locally owned and operated store with partitions to make shoppers more comfortable when they lie in the beds to get a feel for the mattresses.

“When they try out the beds, they don’t feel people are watching them,” Lavely said.

Columbia, MO 65202

Oxford HealthCare, which held its ceremonial opening on Oct. 7, provides home care and hospice services in Boone County and five surrounding counties. Oxford HealthCare President Karen Thomas said the open house was “an opportunity for the community to learn about the many services available to improve quality of life and help remain safe and independent at home.” Oxford is a 35-year-old company based in Springfield. Oxford acquired Sinclair Home Care from University of Missouri Health Care on July 1 and moved the office from the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center on Aug. 26.
