New Neutrals

The word neutral creates a feeling of comfort for some and boredom for others. Over the decades, the words beige and taupe have become synonymous with mundane. They have come to be seen as safe colors – not causing a strong emotional response. There is a reason they are used so predominantly in healthcare facilities and model homes. These colors provide a solid foundation that allows for the playful inclusion of other colors. The use of color is emotional. Color triggers memories and feelings. When you are shopping for a new home, neutrals are frequently used because it allows the potential buyer to easily envision themselves in the space.

When you have your own home, many people love the inclusion of color (myself included). Color and décor gives the room an identity. Now, even if you splash color all over the walls, ceiling, and floor, it is still important to have a neutral element to tone down the visual intensity and also provide a nice contrast. One of my favorite ways to incorporate a subtle neutral is through the use of metals. People frequently overlook the fact that your furniture or accessories can easily provide that visual balance. The following are five ways to utilize metals to create that neutral balance in your room:

1.       Add modern tables and chairs to your room. They will contrast nicely with large pieces of furniture while also adding a neutral element.

2.       Add metal socket and light switch covers.

3.       Add an elaborate metal chandelier or light

4.       Add a metal rack for books and accessories or hooks for jackets, purses, or jewelry

5.       Add metal picture frames or metal framed mirrors

My favorite metal of the moment is brushed gold or brass. I know, I can’t believe it’s back in style after having been endlessly spray painted over this past decade. It adds a high style look to any room.

Not passionate about metals? Neutrals can also be incorporated utilizing other textures such as fur, silks, tweed, and natural elements.
