Life has a way of changing faster than your insurance paperwork. One year you are renting your first apartment and before you know it you may be planning a wedding, welcoming a child, buying a home or moving to a new city. Those milestones can also change what you own, who depends on you and what you may need from your insurance coverage. That’s why an annual insurance review matters more than many people realize. It’s easy to renew the same policies year after year, but a quick review can help you spot changes that may affect your coverage, limits or potential discounts.

Marriage is one example. Combining households may mean combining belongings, vehicles or financial responsibilities. If you buy a home together, your homeowners coverage becomes part of a bigger picture. If one spouse depends on the other’s income, life insurance may also become more important. The right amount of coverage can look different when someone else is counting on you.

Having children can bring even more changes. You may want to think about how your family would manage everyday expenses, childcare, education costs or a mortgage if something unexpected happened. You may find that your home, auto or renters coverage needs a second look as your household grows and your belongings change. Having a teen driver in the house can affect auto coverage, so a review can help you plan for that.

Moving can change your insurance needs too. A new address may affect home or renters coverage. A longer commute or different parking situation could affect your rates. Even if you move across town, it is worth checking in so your policy details stay accurate.

Past claims can also teach valuable lessons. After a loss, people often wish they had understood their deductibles better, taken a home inventory, listed the right drivers, asked more questions about optional coverage or reviewed limits before they needed them. Insurance is much easier to adjust before a claim than after one.

An annual review gives you a chance to look ahead instead of only reacting to what has already happened. Are you remodeling your home? Letting someone borrow your car more often? Sending a child to college? Buying jewelry or recreational equipment? Each change may be worth mentioning to your insurance agent.

Future-proofing your coverage does not mean predicting every turn life will take. It simply means making a habit of checking whether your insurance still fits your current life. As your family, finances, home and responsibilities change, your policies may need to change with them. A yearly conversation with your agent can help you understand your options, make more informed decisions and identify available discounts.

Life will keep moving, so your insurance should not be stuck in the past. Taking time once a year to review your coverage can help you.
